For many enthusiasts, the ultimate goal isn't simply owning a well-made replica, but crafting a truly exceptional piece through the meticulous process of "frankening." This involves assembling a watch from various genuine and replica parts, aiming for a level of authenticity and quality that surpasses the capabilities of any single factory production. This article details my experience building a 42mm Rolex Explorer II (reference 216570) with a Bock dial, a project I've dubbed my "BP Rolex Explorer Franken."
The appeal of frankening is multifaceted. It allows for the customization of a watch beyond the limitations of factory-produced replicas. It allows for the integration of superior components, pushing the boundaries of what's achievable within the replica market. And finally, it's a deeply satisfying personal project, a testament to dedication and a deep understanding of horological construction.
My journey began with a desire for a specific configuration: a 216570 Explorer II with the coveted Bock dial. This dial, known for its unique and subtle textural variations, is highly sought after among collectors, both genuine and replica. Finding a replica with this specific dial and the desired level of quality proved challenging, leading me down the path of frankening.
The Parts List: A Symphony of Genuine and Replica Components
The foundation of my BP Rolex Explorer Franken was a BP factory case and movement. The BP factory is renowned for its relatively high level of accuracy and attention to detail, making it a popular choice for frankening projects. However, even the best factory replicas can have shortcomings, especially when compared to genuine components. This is where the art of frankening comes into play.
The key to a successful franken is careful part selection. My build incorporated the following:
* BP Factory Case and Movement: The base of my project. While not perfect, the BP case provided a solid foundation, offering a respectable level of accuracy in terms of dimensions and finishing. The movement, while a replica, offered reliable timekeeping within acceptable parameters for a replica watch.
* Genuine Black Dial (Bock Dial): This was the centerpiece of my project. The Bock dial's unique texture and subtle variations in color are notoriously difficult to replicate perfectly. Using a genuine dial dramatically elevated the watch's overall quality and authenticity. The subtle differences in the printing, the depth of the lume, and the overall feel were immediately noticeable compared to any replica dial I had examined.
* Genuine LEC/AR Crystal: The lens, or crystal, is another critical component. The factory crystals often fall short in terms of clarity and anti-reflective coating. A genuine Rolex LEC/AR (Lexan Enhanced Crystal with Anti-Reflective coating) significantly improved the readability and overall visual appeal of the watch. The improved clarity and minimized reflections created a much more premium look and feel.
* Selected Genuine Hands: While the BP hands were acceptable, I opted for a set of genuine Rolex hands to further enhance the overall coherence and quality of the build. The subtle differences in shape, finish, and lume application made a noticeable improvement.
* Other Components: Other components, such as the bezel insert, crown, and bracelet, were carefully selected, combining genuine Rolex parts where possible to improve quality and authenticity. The goal was to replace any part that significantly impacted the visual experience or the feel of the watch.
